Above: Clifford's Shellback or Crossing-the-Line certificate commemorates his crossing of the Equatorial line for the first time while Master-at-Arms on board the tramp steamer SS Venture. Although the Venture's log books were lost when she was sunk early in World War II, it is believed that usually outlandish shellback ceremony that marked Clifford's seagoing right of passage took place in the Atlantic Ocean. It is surmised the Captain Englehorn's plotted route took the Venture to its mysterious destination "...way west of Sumatra" via the South Atlantic, Cape Town and the Indian Ocean. |
